Caregiver for special needs child
We need a home support worker to care for our headstrong 10 year old boy with Down syndrome. He is active and needs constant one-to-one supervision. His activities include horse riding, swimming, Special Olympics, basketball, hockey, soccer, etc. A passion for childcare and a love of the outdoors, combined with comfort around large animals such as horses and dogs, is important. Safety is our main concern.
Your duties will include:
taking our child to, and picking him up from, school and after-school activities;
taking care of our child after school and keeping him safe, including helping him with homework;
keeping our child safe at horse riding fairs and other special events;
Assistance with personal hygiene and going to the toilet; and
Preparing his meals and light housekeeping.
Your work hours will be Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm (with breaks), with occasional overtime as needed. Your work will be performed at and generally in the vicinity of our home, which is in the Southlands, Vancouver area. This is a permanent position.
Skills and Requirements
The right candidate will:
have at least one year of experience in working with special needs children (relevant certifications will be considered an asset);
have a first aid certification;
have a secondary (high) school diploma or the equivalent;
be physically fit enough to keep up with an active 10 year old boy;
be fluent in English, both oral and written;
have a good level of comfort in the presence of large animals such as horses and dogs;
be a team player and flexible, sometimes working overtime when childcare is needed; and
Salary: $18.00 per hour, with overtime at 1.5 times the regular hourly rate.
